What are Proposition Bets? |

Will Elliot Spitzer hook up with another Washington area Call Girl? Will Bill Clinton divorce Hillary? Who will be elected president in 2012? Will a meteor hit China? These crazy ideas can all be considered prop bets, which are offered by most major online sportsbooks as fun, diversionary bets. In general, prop bets are based on events that will happen within one week to 4 months time, mainly to manage the sportsbook's handle and wagering activities in an efficient manner. Definition of a Proposition bet: A Proposition bet is a wager on some event or outcome created by the sportsbook wagering staff sometime in the near future. Prop bets can be related to sports, pop culture, politics, or other interesting topics. Most of the time, these bets don't pay much, except in pseudo-sports areas like political elections, where odds are set for all the respective candidates. Proposit Bet Example: Will Britney Spears win a Grammy? Odds: 100 to 1. If you think Spears is good for a Grammy this year, and she does indeed win a Grammy, you'll get paid $100 for every $1 you wager. Therefore, a $5 wager on Spears will yield a $500 payout. (These odds are just an example and may not be the actual odds you'll find at a sportsbook) Thoughts on Proposition Bets: 1. Can I make a career of winning prop bets? Probably not. Prop bets are meant to be fun wagers that are not taken as seriously as regular sports betting. Accordingly, sportsbooks do not attach big payouts to prop bets unless doing so would create more customer interest in the respective sportsbook. Furthermore, to consistently win prop bets, you would need to have some psychic powers, because predicting events up to 4-6 months in the future is nearly impossible! 2. What type of Prop bets are best? We don't really have an opinion on this, other than that the best prop bets are generally for political races, where more than 2 contenders are looking for a party nomination. In this case, there will be odds on more than 2 contestants, and this makes the prop bet more interesting and potentially a bigger payout if won. Other prop bets, like Pop Culture, Weather, or Random events are not as easy to guess, because the physics of these events are much more diverse than say, a baseball game between 2 big rivals. 3. Read your sportsbook's prop bet rules carefully - they can be different for each prop bet, depending on many factors. For example, some sportsbooks will often post prop bets on current events in order to attract new customers. These wagers are generally marketing ploys, and are difficult to actually win. As a result, if a prop bet catches your attention, and the sportsbook offering the bet seems reputable, consider actually betting on sports instead of the prop bet that got you through the door. 4. Where are the best sportsbooks for sports betting and prop bets? We recommend the following places to bet, which are universally acknowledged by many sports betting authority websites to be reputable operations: Sportsbook.com |
